Nakhlites are a group of Martian meteorites named after the first one, known as the Nakhla meteorites which fell in Egypt, June 28, 1911. They are igneous rocks rich in augite and were formed from basaltic magma about 1.3 billion years ago. They rank amongst the rarest of Martian meteorites. This specimen was discovered in NW Africa and remains under study.
